NEW BERN, N.C. – Civil patrol members nationwide took part in a ceremony Saturday to honor the military by placing wreaths at memorials and cemeteries across the country as part of the Wreaths Across America ceremony. During the ceremony, there were seven wreaths placed at a cemetery in New Bern. But afterward, families who have a loved one buried there were also able to place a wreath by their grave. 'This is the first I've heard of this, and I think it's a wonderful thing,' Martha Lewis, whose late husband was a service member, said. 'I just didn't understand what it was all about until I got here, but to me it's an honor.'

Similar ceremonies were held throughout the country and in other parts of the state. Each began at noon, and they all honored the thousands of men and women who are serving or have served the country. The ceremonies started nearly 20 years ago, and now, more than 5,000 wreaths are donated every year. The wreaths are sent from Maine to Arlington National Cemetery every year, and from there, they are sent on to each state. There were more than 200 Wreaths Across America ceremonies held Saturday.
